Guide

01Overview

The HexLabs ESP32 Marauder V8 is a compact, portable hardware suite designed for RF analysis, Wi-Fi auditing, and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) exploration. Built around expressive wireless SoC technology, the V8 iteration integrates a bright touchscreen, expandable storage, GPS positioning, and dual-band RF scanning capabilities into a self-contained handheld device. Whether you are a student learning network security fundamentals or a field technician performing wireless site surveys, this guide covers everything you need to know to get started safely and effectively.

02What's in the box

Inside your HexLabs ESP32 Marauder V8 package, you will find:

  • ESP32 Marauder V8 Unit: Handheld hardware enclosure with integrated touchscreen and battery switch.
  • Dual-Band External SMA Antennas: High-gain omnidirectional antennas for wireless frame capture.
  • GPS Antenna: Active patch antenna for real-time location telemetry.
  • USB-C Cable: High-speed data transfer and charging cable.
  • Quick Start Reference Card: Essential pinout details and default menu navigation shortcuts.

03Hardware anatomy

Understanding the hardware layout ensures proper operation and prevents damage during field work:

  • 2.8-inch Touchscreen: Primary interface for navigating Marauder firmware menus without requiring an external terminal or PC connection.
  • ESP32-C5 Dual-Band Wireless Core: Drives 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz wireless packet processing alongside BLE scanning operations.
  • SMA Antenna Ports: Standard threaded connectors for attaching higher-gain external antennas.
  • MicroSD Card Slot: Accepts FAT32-formatted storage cards up to 32GB for saving PCAP captures, GPS tracks, and firmware update files.
  • Integrated GPS Module: Delivers spatial coordinates and timestamps for wireless mapping and audit logs.
  • USB-C Interface: Provides serial CLI communication, power input, and flashing support.
  • Power Switch & LiPo Battery: Enables untethered handheld usage with integrated charging circuitry.

04First boot

Follow these steps to power on and initialize your Marauder V8 safely:

  1. Attach Antennas: Thread both external antennas onto the SMA connectors prior to switching on the device. Operating RF transmitters without antennas connected can harm internal amplifiers.
  2. Insert MicroSD Card: Place a FAT32-formatted MicroSD card into the dedicated slot until it clicks securely into place.
  3. Power On: Toggle the physical power switch to the ON position. The display will light up and display the primary firmware interface.
  4. Touch Screen Check: Navigate the interface using a stylus or fingernail. If touch inputs drift, access the system menu to trigger the calibration routine.

05Core features

The Marauder V8 contains integrated analysis modules for non-destructive signal analysis:

Wi-Fi Discovery and Analysis

Select WiFi -> Scan APs to detect local broadcast networks. Switch to Show APs to inspect active SSIDs, signal metrics (RSSI), channels, and security configurations such as WPA2 or WPA3.

Bluetooth & BLE Scanning

Choose BLE -> Scan Devices to monitor Bluetooth Low Energy signals, wearable tech, and peripheral beacons. The Marauder aggregates advertisement packets and displays device MAC addresses and names.

GPS Integration

Select GPS -> GPS Info to verify satellite lock status, altitude, and positional coordinates. When combined with active Wi-Fi discovery, positional telemetry is logged directly alongside network records.

06Advanced usage

Logging Packets to MicroSD (PCAP)

To record raw 802.11 frames for detailed offline analysis inside tools like Wireshark:

  1. Confirm the SD card status displays as initialized in the menu bar.
  2. Navigate to WiFi -> Sniffers -> Raw Capture.
  3. Begin the capture session. Raw packets are written continuously as .pcap files to the card root directory.

Firmware Updates

Ensure your device runs the latest official release by using the command-line flashing utility over USB-C:

esptool.py --chip esp32 --port /dev/ttyUSB0 write_flash 0x0 marauder_v8_firmware.bin

Alternatively, place a binary file named update.bin on your MicroSD card and launch System -> SD Update directly on the device display.
